Fall Burndown Options For Corn And Soybeans

Nov 01, 2022

Fall is an excellent time to control many troublesome perennial and/or winter annual weeds, such as:

  • dandelion
  • chickweed
  • henbit
  • purple deadnettle
  • pennycress
  • shepherd’s purse
  • marestail
  • Canada thistle
  • white cockle
  • prickly lettuce
  • poison hemlock
  • pokeweed
  • various mustard species

Fall herbicide programs have a wide application window and may be applied from harvest until the ground freezes. Once the ground freezes, weed growth will essentially have ceased. Applications after this limit herbicide effectiveness and increase the risk of residual herbicide runoff onto sensitive areas. Optimum residual activity with residual herbicides is obtained when fall applications are delayed until soil temperatures are 50ºF or cooler.

The University of Tennessee recently published their emerging research that sheds light on the growing problem of acephate resistance in tobacco thrips in West TN. The study investigated thrips populations in cotton fields and found that certain populations displayed varying levels of resistance to acephate, one of the key pesticides currently used to combat thrips infestations.
